Blu Ray vs HD DVD - Ref Stops Fight
September 3, 2008
If you were one of the sensible consumers who waited to see the outcome of the Blu Ray vs HD DVD war, the wait is over and Blu Ray won after the referee stopped the fight in the 7th round to put HD DVD out of its misery. If you jumped the gun and didn’t wait for the outcome, hopefully you backed the winner!
So what is Blu Ray? It is simply the next level of data storage. A dvd disc can hold 4.7GB of information where as a Blu Ray disc can hold around 15GB. This extra room means there is now the space to record video with a lot more detail; High Definition.
High definition means more dots per square inch so the picture is so much more sharper and clearer but you will need a HD ready TV to see the benefit.
One of the reasons Blu Ray won the Blu Ray vs HD DVD battle was the Sony Playstation. Blu Ray was invented by Sony who pulled off a master stroke by shipping their Playstation 3 with a built in Blu Ray player. The graphics are next generation on the Playstation 3 and it was a great advert for their Blu Ray system.
It’s not the first time Sony have used this marketing tactic. Playstation 1 made many sales because it came as a CD player and games console and Playstation 2 came as a DVD player/games console.
Movie buffs who were on the fence in the Blu Ray vs HD DVD fight were swung by the fact if they purchased the Playstation 3 they got a free top of the range games console thrown in.
Hardened gamers who weren’t sure which games console to go for went for the Playstation 3 because it had the added bonus of a Blu Ray player built in to keep the wife happy.
